Superfast Broadband – update

To help keep you informed West Sussex County Council have created a new website which includes an interactive map to keep track of what is happening where. As the County Council  begin building the network they can update the map to show where work is being carried out and when broadband services will become available. The website also has information about the benefits of better, faster broadband and helps to put users in touch with broadband suppliers. The website will be live this week.

The National Flood Forum Conference 2014

Community Flood Risk Management: Improving Effectiveness and Efficiency

March 13th 2014 SOAS University of London

Diary date – Please Forward to colleagues would be interested

Book here and check out the programme

National policy on flood risk management is increasingly focussed on the benefit of flood risk management interventions to communities and empowering them to take ownership and work with partners.  This presents a challenge to many organisations. The aim of this conference is to explore the details of this approach and by assessing evidence from early lessons from the Flood Resilience Community Pathfinders and other projects. Key themes will include:

1.  To understand the positions of the political parties in relation to insurance, flood risk and communities

2.  To promote and focus on the benefits of community based approaches to flood risk management

3.  To be able to demonstrate how community approaches help to deliver services efficiently, at less cost and through a range of external partnership arrangements that protect staffing and budget lines

4.  Community engagement processes will increasingly become more sophisticated.  We need to learn from best practice and take early lessons from the Flood Resilience Community Pathfinder programme

Book Now: You can book for this conference online by visiting the conference webpage and pay by credit card. Should you wish to pay by BACS or cheque please complete the booking form in the programme and email to , alternatively fax to 01531 890415 or post to CMS (address on booking form).

Are you responsible for the ditch adjacent to your property? This workshop may be of interest

The Manhood Wildlife and Heritage Group are running a workshop on Saturday 8th February from 10.00am – 1.00pm on Ditch Assessment at Sidlesham Church Hall, Church farm Lane, Sidlesham.  Pete King of the Rivers Trust will be giving a presentation on how to assess ditches and waterways for their biodiversity potential, specifically for water voles, and how this can be measured.  This will be followed by a practical session looking at a ditch in Church Farm Lane where participants can ask questions in the field and get experience.

Ditches and waterways are a large linked habitat on the Manhood Peninsula and their care and upkeep is not just of benefit to wildlife but increasingly to people as more frequent flooding events take place.  Well maintained ditches, ponds and rifes allow water to flow away to the sea, prevent flooding and provide a stable and important home to many species, including the fast declining water vole.  By carrying out ditch assessment work, problem areas can be identified and so can be targeted for future maintenance and improvement.

This workshop will be useful to riparian landowners and managers, parish councillors and wildlife enthusiasts.

If you would like to attend this event please contact me on so that I can ensure that there are sufficient refreshments for everyone to enjoy and enough leaflets and information handouts.

December Storms Online Survey – Did you loose your electricity supply?

Dear Stakeholder,

On 23 and 24 December 2013, our electricity distribution network in the South East and the East of England was affected by severe weather conditions, affecting power supplies to about 300,000 households. Although in most cases, engineers were able to restore supplies quickly, the extensive damage caused to the network by high winds and floods left some customers without power over the Christmas period.

Your feedback is valuable to us and we would like to understand more about your experience in the December storms. We welcome suggestions on what we can do better to improve communication and make the electricity network more resilient in the future.

We have created a short online survey which we encourage you to complete. To access the survey, please go to http://www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk/internet/en/have-your-say/  Then scroll down the page and click on ‘Complete a Survey’.

Please feel free to send the link to anyone in UK Power Networks’ geographical footprint who may have been affected by the storms .

This online survey forms part of the series of consultations we hold to collect views from customers and wider stakeholders on their experience during the storms.

Our stakeholders have a say in what we do and we take all feedback very seriously.

Many thanks

This project is part of a national project funded by the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). It is one of 13 pathfinder projects around England designed to help local people take action to improve their resilience to flooding.

The information you provide us with in this survey will help Defra to better understand what builds resilience to flooding at a local level and help with the design of future policy. Defra, West Sussex and the National Flood Forum are very grateful for your help and involvement in this project.

Once you have completed the survey, you will be entered into a prize draw to win a household emergency kit! The winner will be chosen at random on the 15 December and contacted either by phone or email so please ensure that these details are provided.
