Closure of Barclays Bank East Wittering

On Wednesday 6 December 2017 we will be closing our branch at 1 Shore Road, East Wittering.

Our records show a low and falling level of transactions with a ten per cent fall in the last year alone, and that three quarters of our regular customers also use other ways to do their banking such as online and by telephone. We have also identified that only 80 regular customers use this branch exclusively for their banking, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close it.

This closure means our nearest branches will be in Chichester, Selsey and Bognor Regis. Everyday transactions, typically carried out over branch counters (including withdrawing and depositing cash or paying in cheques), can also be completed at any Post Office with the closest being at the Co-op in Kingfisher Parade, East Wittering.

Please be assured that we do not take the decision to close any branch lightly and we are committed to adhering to the UK Access to Banking Standard. All of our customers will receive a letter, our Reason for Closure document and posters will be displayed in branch and colleagues will be on hand to assist customers with any concerns they may have. We will be proactively engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally, before the branch closes.

Customers who currently use the branch will not need to take any action as all account details, sort code, account number, direct debits will remain the same. If a customer is registered for Barclays Mobile Banking, Online Banking and Telephone Banking they are also exactly the same, and customers can carry on using existing cards, PIN and chequebooks as normal.

Increase in HMRC frauds
Sussex, elderly people are receiving a high volume of phone calls purporting to be from
HMRC. So far, none of them sent money, but it is vital that people are aware of the signs
and act on them.

This is a recent case study:
A man of 87 living alone in East Sussex, received a call from a woman claiming to be from
HMRC. He was transferred on the line and spoke to an unknown male saying that he
owed them money and that he would be taken to court if he didn’t pay up. The victim
offered to pay and the caller told him to go to their office in Tunbridge Wells.
The victim said he could not get there, so the caller then told him to go to buy iTunes
vouchers from Tesco, so he consequently went to Tesco in Bexhill-On-Sea and tried to
obtain £1500 worth.

The manager at Tesco asked him lots of questions and became suspicious and told the
victim this was a scam. The caller was still on his mobile phone while he was trying to buy
the vouchers. The Tesco manager asked to talk to him and when he did the caller on the
end of the phone swore at the manager. Luckily no money was parted with and the
incident was reported to the Police
.

These are some of the contact methods used to defraud people in Sussex:

Voicemails: saying you owe HMRC unpaid tax.
Text messages: fraudsters send you a text message requesting you to urgently call
back on the number provided.

Protect yourself
HMRC will never use a text message to inform you about a tax rebate or penalty.
HMRC will never ask for any payment in the form of iTunes Vouchers. As well as
iTunes vouchers, HMRC would not ask for payment in the form of any other
vouchers or any other payment methods. HMRC will never use texts to tell you
about a tax rebate or penalty or ever ask for payment in this way.

If you or someone you know is vulnerable and has been a victim
of fraud call Sussex Police on 101 or visit www.sussex.police.uk
If you need to a report fraud or attempted fraud, you can do so by
contacting Action Fraud at or by calling 0300 123 2040. You can also

South Downs Holiday update – from Chichester District Council

As you are aware, we have been keeping you updated on the situation at South Downs Holiday Park, and we promised to let you know as soon as the planning application appears online.

The last time we updated you, we said that we had received a planning application from the management agents Cre8, and that this was going through the validation process. We also explained that this process might take a little bit of time before the application goes online, which is normal procedure.

The planning application has now been validated and can be viewed at https://publicaccess.chichester.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=ORFLC4ERH7D00  . You may also be aware that we have received a valid licensing application for the site, which can be viewed at https://publicaccess.chichester.gov.uk/online-applications/simpleSearchResults.do?action=firstPage  .

For those who are not familiar with this case, a couple of months ago we were made aware that the South Downs Holiday Village was being used to accommodate agricultural workers. Following our investigations, we issued a Breach of Condition Notice on the management agents, Cre8, and the owners, Seaward Properties This required the management agents, Cre8, to stop using the holiday accommodation for residential purposes within 28 days (from the day the notice was served).

The management agents, Cre8, submitted a planning application for a change of use of the site, to allow them to use the site to accommodate agricultural workers. This was received within the 28 day notice period.

In these circumstances, it is appropriate that any formal legal proceedings are placed on hold until the outcome of the planning application is determined. This is because it is unlikely that any legal action would be upheld by the courts while an application is under consideration. The planning application will give residents the opportunity to comment on the development and the local planning authority the chance to properly assess it against the planning policies of the council’s adopted Local Plan. It is necessary for this process to be undertaken objectively and thoroughly.

The planning application is now on our website and is available for the public to view and comment on. It will also be publicised in the local newspapers and on notices at the site. It will be given careful consideration by the council and will follow the normal planning application process. It is anticipated that the application will be reported to the council’s Planning Committee for a decision in due course.

We understand that some residents may feel frustrated by the time that this has taken, but planning is a very complex area and we want to reassure you that we are taking the appropriate and timely action.

If you are interested in keeping updated on planning applications in your area, then please sign up to our alert system on our website. This lets you know when planning applications in your area appear on the planning portal (as long as they are not within the South Downs National Park). You can do this by visiting http://www.chichester.gov.uk/viewplanningapplications
